Kongu-style Arisi Paruppu Sadam is a traditional and flavorful rice dish from the Kongu region of Tamil Nadu. Here's a simple recipe to prepare this delicious dish:
Ingredients:
- 1 cup rice
- 1 cup Toor dal
- 2 cups water
- 1 tablespoon ghee
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1 inch ginger, grated
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon ground coriander
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
- Salt, to taste
- 2-3 dried red chilies, broken into pieces
- 1 sprig curry leaves
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro (optional)
Instructions:
1. Rinse the rice and toor dal separately and soak them in water for at least 30 minutes. Drain the water and set them aside.
2. Heat ghee in a pan over medium heat. Add the broken red chilies, curry leaves, and sauté for a minute.
3. Add the chopped onion, minced garlic, and grated ginger. Sauté until the onion is translucent.
4. Add the cumin, coriander, turmeric powder, and salt. Sauté for a minute, until the spices are fragrant.
5. Add the soaked and drained rice and toor dal to the pan. Mix well with the spice mixture.
6. Add 2 cups of water to the pan and bring to a boil.
7. Reduce the heat to low, cover the pan with a lid, and simmer for 20-25 minutes or until the rice and dal are cooked and mushy.
8. Fluff the Arisi Paruppu Sadam with a fork and garnish with chopped cilantro (if using).
9. Serve hot with your favorite side dishes, such as sambar, rasam, or kootu.
Tips:
- Use a 1:1 ratio of rice to toor dal for the best flavor and texture.
- Adjust the amount of spices and chili powder according to your desired level of spiciness.
- You can add vegetables like carrots, peas, or beans to the sadam for added flavor and nutrition.
